The Secrets of Healthy Ageing
Join Prof. Alan Gow (Heriot-Watt University) in person to uncover practical tips for staying healthy and happy as you get older.
In these Borrow a Researcher sessions, Alan Gow explores the ways in which you can keep your brain sharp! He'll discuss the science of 'brain training' and the benefits of remaining engaged in mental, social or physical activities. Exploring this research in a fun and interactive way, he'll showcase the many ways in which we can help stay sharp as we age!
Professor Alan Gow leads The Ageing Lab at Heriot-Watt University and is Deputy Director of the Centre for Applied Behavioural Sciences. His research explores the identification of lifestyle and behavioural factors that predict healthy ageing, primarily brain health.

Inclusivity for Everyone
At West Lothian Libraries, we are committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone, regardless of background, ability, or identity, feels welcome and valued. We strive to provide accessible services, diverse resources, and supportive spaces that empower all individuals to engage with our library services. To ensure our customers know what our libraries look like, how they can get support and how our libraries are laid out, we have developed our very own Social Stories and Colour Coded Layout Plans and are currently in the process of implementing Boardmaker Signage which will be displayed in each library.
What is a Social Story?
A social story is a simple, structured narrative designed to help individuals, particularly those with autism or other additional support needs, understand and navigate social situations. It uses clear language and visual cues to explain expectations, behaviours, and appropriate responses in a way that makes social interactions easier to understand and more predictable. Social stories help build confidence and improve social skills by providing a visual and written guide to handling various scenarios. What is a Colour Coded Layout Plan?
A colour-coded layout plan is a visual map that uses different colours to represent and organize various areas, features, or functions within a space. This helps to make the layout easily understandable, guiding individuals to their desired area or understanding the purpose of different sections within the library. The use of colour enhances accessibility by providing a clear, intuitive way to navigate the environment, especially for people with additional support needs or those who may benefit from visual cues. Quiet Hour
West Lothian Libraries have identified an hour every week in our libraries when our spaces are quieter. This means that if you visit the library during this time, you should find the space to be more calm and quiet than usual. This is to support our customers who find busy, noisy spaces overwhelming and to provide a place where everyone can enjoy our libraries.
Lex Davidson Library, Broxburn Quiet Hour is:
Saturdays 12pm - 1pm
Please note, we cannot guarantee that on some occasions the libraries may be busier than usual during these times, however we have determined that these are the quietest periods in our libraries for people who find loud noises and busy spaces overwhelming, to visit.
Currently showing 'This Broxburn Boy's Life' showcasing the life of film director Michael Caton-Jones who was born and grew up in Broxburn.
