Edinburgh Road, Bathgate - Phased Roadworks (Monday 21 Sep)
Work to deliver significant road and infrastructure improvements on Edinburgh Road, Bathgate starts from 21 September 2026
The 24 week programme of works includes a complete resurfacing of around 1.2km of road and footpath from the Guildiehaugh Roundabout to King Street, the construction of a cycle way, improved pedestrian crossings and other road improvements.
Phase 1A of the project will see the resurfacing of the south footway and the cycle track construction with kerbing, drainage and street lighting alterations between Guildiehaugh Roundabout to just opposite Lindsay Gardens.
No road closures will be required, with two-way traffic flow maintained in narrow lanes. There will be no right turn into or out of Lindsay Gardens during this phase, with pedestrians diverted onto the north footway.
This phase of works is expected to take around six weeks, finishing around Friday 6 November.
We will provide updates in the future phases of the works closer to the time, and any traffic management work required to ensure the safety of the workers involved.
Edinburgh Road project overview
The major works to revamp and renew Edinburgh Road in Bathgate is expected to continue until March 2027.
Part of the works is funded through Transport Scotland's Active Travel Infrastructure Fund, which is ring-fenced funding to deliver active travel improvements and cannot be used for any other works.
A segregated two-way cycleway will be installed, with the replacement of several uncontrolled crossing points with new controlled crossings.
The entire carriageway and the majority of the southern footway, approximately 1.2km in length, will also be resurfaced from Guildiehaugh Roundabout to the crossing point at King Street car park with funding provided by West Lothian Council.
Other improvements works will include the installation of the new kerb lines, traffic lights, street lighting, removing existing traffic islands and resetting of ironwork such as drains and manholes.
The work is planned to be completed over several phases, starting towards the east end at Guildiehaugh Roundabout and moving westwards. The resurfacing element of each section takes less time to complete but the traffic management will need to be in place throughout to ensure there is sufficient space for the contractor to work safely and efficiently. Officers are working with the contractor to determine timescales for when surfacing works will be completed, to minimise risk of damage to the final surface.
