BSL (British Sign Language) Information on council services

The BSL (Scotland) Act 2015 requires public bodies in Scotland to develop and publish a local plan which demonstrates how they will work towards supporting the implementation of the Scottish BSL National plan.

The Scottish Government published its British Sign Language (BSL) National Plan 2023-2029 in November. The aim of the national plan is to make Scotland the best place in the world for BSL signers to live, work, visit and learn and focuses on ten priorities with an emphasis on children, young people and their families, health and wellbeing, celebrating deaf culture and tackling accessibility for BSL users.

Informed by local and national consultation, the West Lothian Council BSL plan is framed around the long-term goals included in the Scottish Government BSL National Plan 2023-2029.

The plan includes a range of actions that aim to ensure equal access to services and support for BSL users across West Lothian.
