Frequently Asked Questions regarding Community Transport
Community Transport is the council's internal fleet of vehicles, drivers and passenger assistants. The service aims to provide a safe and comfortable journey for vulnerable adults and children with additional support needs from their homes to Support Centres and schools throughout West Lothian.
School transport routes are predominately contracted to external bus and taxi providers who operate contracts on behalf of the council. The Community Transport Service, however, is an internal service of council employees.
As transport staff are employed directly by the council it provides additional control of continuity and staff planning. Furthermore, our model allows for transport staff to be integrated into the school staffing establishment working closely with teachers and support workers ensuring that we are providing the best service for pupils during transport.
Our model also uses a combination of employed Passenger Assistants as well as Pupil Support Workers (PSW). This, again, provides a continuity for pupils of staff throughout the transport and school day.
