Through a range of targeted initiatives, River Kids Children's Charity is committed to reducing the impact of poverty and creating brighter futures for children and families across the community.

The funding will support a diverse range of initiatives, including sensory gardens, healthy snack programmes, cooking workshops and inclusive activities designed to improve wellbeing, build confidence and create meaningful opportunities for children to learn and grow.

This support will enable more than 1,200 children and young people to take part in enriching activities, educational experiences, and opportunities that support their personal development, regardless of their financial circumstances. By helping to remove economic obstacles, River Kids continues to champion equal opportunities for all, ensuring every child has the chance to thrive and reach their full potential.

This project builds on the dedicated work River Kids provides all year round as not only are children provided with opportunities but with the items required for wellbeing and participation in daily life. This is achieved through 'The Essential Foundations for Childhood' project, delivering practical material items such as clothing, beds, and essential household items. By meeting essential needs, the foundations for a stable and supportive childhood are built, removing practical barriers to ensure the full benefits of participation are achieved. This is achieved through public donations which can be dropped to their warehouse in Broxburn Monday - Thursday 9am - 4pm.

Keeley Renton, Project Lead at River Kids, outlined the aims of the Equal Opportunities Fund and the difference it hopes to make within local communities:

"At River Kids, we understand the opportunity gap faced by children and young people experiencing economic hardship, and the impact this can have on their development. This year, we hope to help close that gap by supporting schools across West Lothian to deliver projects such as accessible STEM experiences, residential camps, and healthy eating initiatives. Our hope is that the young people we support grow in confidence, develop new skills, broaden their experiences, and feel empowered to reach their full potential. We look forward to seeing these projects progress and the positive impact they will have on children across West Lothian. We would like to thank the many businesses, local groups and individuals who recognise the importance of our work and their support throughout the year to allow the delivery of this fund for a second successive year."

Addiewell Primary School and nursery are one of the schools that are benefitting from the River Kids Equal Opportunities fund. River Kids Manager Stephen Newman visited the school where he met Head Teacher Eileen Brown who emphasised the impact that the project is already having on her pupils.

Mrs Brown said; "Through River kids providing funded snacks we can ensure that every child has access to the food they need to thrive. Snacks not only supports physical growth but also improves concentration and overall readiness to learn, helping children make the most of every opportunity in the classroom. River Kids is also providing opportunities for our children to try new foods and flavours. Our children love the variety of snack and eating it together as a class."

Executive councillor for Education, Andrew McGuire also took part in the visit and spent time learning about the benefits of this initiative for pupils.

Cllr McGuire said: "My thanks to the pupils and staff at Addiewell and the team at Riverkids for their support. It was a pleasure to meet them all. This is a great initiative, supporting the wellbeing of pupils while also providing opportunities for pupils to learn the importance of nutrition and the vital role it plays in supporting daily activities."

As River Kids continues to expand the reach of the Equal Opportunities Fund, the charity hopes to build on its success by securing additional support and investment. Increased funding will allow even more schools, nurseries and community organisations to access resources that help children thrive, ensuring that opportunities are determined by potential rather than circumstance.
