West Lothian 20mph changes - Phase 1
Speed limits are being reduced in the areas with most residents first, with Phase 1 implemented during Winter 2025/26
These include Livingston, Pumpherston, Uphall Station, Polbeth, West Calder, Bathgate and Blackburn.
Once the new temporary limits are in place, we will consult with residents on how the new speed limits are working in their area before they are made permanent. Details of how to take part in the consultation will be available once the new limits are in place.
Please expand on the links below to see maps for each area in Phase 1.
The roads where the speed limit will be reduced from 30mph to 20mph are marked in purple.
Roads marked in yellow will remain 20mph, roads marked in green will stay at 30mphs, and roads marked in blue will stay 40mph.
Why are speed limits being reduced?
Statistics show you are seven times more likely to survive being hit by a vehicle travelling at 20 mph, rather than 30 mph.
Lowering speed limits reduces driving speeds, which then reduces road casualties.
West Lothian Council is implementing Transport Scotland's strategy of reducing driving speed in every town, city, and village across Scotland to make our roads safer, reduce accidents and fatalities, and encourage active travel.
