Information regarding British Citizenship Ceremonies
The registration offices are currently closed for all face to face registrations. Birth and Marriage registrations have currently been suspended across all of Scotland but you are still able to register a death.
Our Registration service is currently open 7 days a week for death registrations. These are currently being completed over the telephone once the certifying doctor has forwarded the medical cause of death certificate to the registration office by email along with contact details for next of kin. If you have any enquiries about registration a death during this difficult time then you can contact our office on either 01506 281898 and 01506 282914 or by email firstname.lastname@example.org
Attending a Citizenship Ceremony.
West Lothian is proud to welcome new citizens. If you make a successful application for British Citizenship, you will receive a letter from the Home office inviting you to attend a ceremony within our Bathgate Registration Office, these are held the third Wednesday of every month at 2.15p.m. Please arrive no later than 2.00pm.
You are expected to attend your ceremony within three months of receiving Citizenship.
The ceremonies are conducted by a Registrar or Assistant Registrar and where possible a Council Dignitary.
What Documents are Required?
When you attend your ceremony you will be required to bring your Citizenship invitation letter from the Home Office and a form of photographic ID: i.e. (Passport, Travel Document, Driving Licence, Biometric Residence Card) if you do not provide these documents you will not be permitted to attend the ceremony. A new ceremony date will then need to be arranged.
What Happens Next?
On receiving your invitation you can give the Bathgate Registration Office a call and they will advise you of the dates of the next ceremony.
You will be asked to confirm at this point if you can attend this ceremony, if you are unable to attend we will advise when the next ceremony will be held.
You can also arrange to have an individual citizenship ceremony for an additional cost which you can discuss with the Registrar.
Please feel free to bring along any guests (up to four) to celebrate this occasion. You will be required to swear allegiance by either Oath or the Affirmation which can be confirmed when arranging your appointment.
When you arrive a member of staff will collect your invitation and check over all your documentation and explain the procedure for the ceremony.
You will then be shown into the ceremony room with the other citizens.
During the ceremony each new citizen will make a pledge to uphold the values and laws of the United Kingdom.
You will also be presented with a pack which contains:
- Your Citizenship Certificate
- An application form to join the Register of Electors
- An application form to apply for a British Passport (if requested)
After your ceremony is finished there is and opportunity for photographs to be taken along with some refreshments.
We aim to make the ceremony an enjoyable celebration.
