Disabled Persons Reduction

You may be entitled to a reduction in your Council Tax if there is a disabled person living in the property.

To qualify there must be a disabled person, either a child or adult, living in the property and one of the following must be present in the property and be essential for the day to day needs of the disabled person:

  • A room, which is not a kitchen, bathroom or lavatory and which is predominately used by and is required for meeting the needs of the disabled person.
  • An additional bathroom or kitchen within the property specifically used for meeting the needs of the disabled person.
  • A wheelchair is used within the property by the disabled person and there is enough floor space to permit the use of the wheelchair. Please note that if the disabled person only requires the use of the wheelchair outwith the property there will be no entitlement to this reduction

How is the Disabled Persons Reduction Calculated:

If you qualify for a Disabled Persons Reduction your Council Tax band will in effect be reduced to the band lower than the actual band you are in. So if you are in a band B property the amount of Council Tax you will be charged will be based on the charges for a band A property.

If your property is already in a band A you will still receive a reduction in your Council Tax if you qualify for a Disabled Person Reduction. The level of reduction you will receive will be one ninth of the charge for a Band A property.
