Accessing Council Information

West Lothian Council is committed to being open, honest and accountable.

  • Freedom of Information requests

    Anyone - from anywhere in the world - has a right to see almost any kind of recorded information held by West Lothian Council, however old the information is. You do not have to say why you want the information or what you want it for and we are obliged to respond to all information requests we receive within 20 working days of receipt.

  • Records Management Plan

    The Public Records (Scotland) Act 2011 (hereafter referred to as "the Act"), came fully into force in January 2013. The Act obliges West Lothian Council and other public authorities to prepare and implement a records management plan (RMP).

  • Environmental Information Requests

    The Environmental Information (Scotland) Regulations 2004 give individuals the right to access environmental information held by public authorities.

  • Re-use of Public Sector Information

    Public sector information is a valuable resource that can be useful to the private sector and to citizens. The purpose of the Re-use of Public Sector Information Regulations is to establish a framework for the effective re-use of public sector information.

  • Data Protection

    The Data Protection Act 1998 provides the overall framework within which users of personal data can operate. It requires that anybody who processes personal information (i.e. obtains, holds, amends, discloses or destroys data) must keep to eight data protection principles.
