Register your food business

A food business which is operating within West Lothian should be registered with Environmental Health and Trading Standards 28 days prior to opening.

The pdf icon Application form for registration of a food business [56kb] should be completed, signed and posted to Environmental Health and Trading Standards, West Lothian Civic Centre, Howden South Road, Livingston, West Lothian, EH54 6FF.

When your completed registration form is received your business details will be included in our premises database and will be included in our inspection plan. You will not require to be inspected prior to opening. Complying with food safety legislation is the responsibility of the food business operator.

We aim to complete the first full inspection of new businesses within 2 - 3 months of registration.

Please note. There is no routine confirmation of the registration process. We are not required to provide any confirmation, but we do appreciate that other parties may ask for evidence that you are registered, and we do try to assist in such cases. However, we are currently unable to respond to requests for confirmation due to other higher priority work demands. Therefore we are not providing this service or assistance at this time.

We are required to provide food business details as part of a public register if someone requests this. This information is generally limited to business details (business name, address and business type) and we do not release personal or sensitive business information routinely (e.g. home address, business operator name etc.). Personal information etc. would only be released for the purpose of enforcement or regulatory control to another party who has legal entitlement to that information.

Information regarding food safety compliance within your business can be released in terms of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002. We also publish relevant information on business compliance under the Food Hygiene Information Scheme.

Childminders (Special Note)

In certain circumstances childminders will have to register as a food business with environmental health. We have attached pdf icon LAE of childminders SFELC childminders 30 June 2010 [189kb] which will help you decide whether you need to.

You will also find helpful information for childminders on the Food Standards Scotland web site.

Once registered you will be added to our premises database. It is however unlikely that we will carry out an inspection of your home or food activity carried out. We consider the food handling activities within domestic child minding settings to be low risk compared with other food business activities we regulate. It is your responsibility to ensure that you prepare food safely and follow good hygiene and safety practices at all times.

It is also your responsibility to advise of any changes to the food safety activities or trading status of your business. If inspections are not carried out we will contact you by letter or email every few years to check if the business is still trading and details held by us under registration are still correct.
