V.E. Day from Home

West Lothian Council has had to cancel our V.E. day event but the Museums Service is inviting you to join us in celebrating V.E. Day from home.

Friday 8th May 2020 marks 75 years since the end of hostilities in Europe was marked by Victory in Europe (VE) Day where crowds took to the streets in their millions to celebrate with bonfires and street parties. Due to the Covid-19 outbreak we are inviting you to celebrate the occasion with a virtual VE Day party, either at home or in your garden rather than with a street party and have some suggestions and downloads to help you.

Why not make some patriotic Icon for pdf bunting [1.65MB] and Icon for pdf flags [1.28MB] to decorate your house and try some of the Icon for word wartime recipes [18.63KB] for your tea party? Make some carrot biscuits or oat flapjacks, for a taste of the foods that would have been made in 1945. Play some music from the 1940's like Vera Lynn or Glenn Miller and try some of the dances popular in the 1940's, like the Lindy Hop.

The Poppy Scotland and English Heritage websites have some great ideas and downloads to get you started and Museums will also be posting a selection of WW2 stories and objects from our collection throughout this week on our Facebook page.

West Lothian's V.E. 75 "Dance from Home"

Lots of people in West Lothian danced in the street to celebrate V.E. Day. While social distancing makes dancing in the street a bit difficult, we would like you to learn our 1940's style V.E. Day 75 dance. This instructional video provided by Central Scotland Ballet School takes you through the steps. On Friday 8th May, we are asking the people of West Lothian to come together and perform a V.E. dance at 8pm. Please share this video with your friends and family and remember to practice before Friday #MuseumFromHome VEDay2020
