Universal Credit Housing Cost Backdate

Some council tenants' Universal Credit claims haven't been updated with the rent increase that was introduced in April 2019.

In April 2019, West Lothian Council raised your rent by 3% as agreed at the council budget meeting in February 2018. At that time, West Lothian Council informed the DWP of the rent increase so that your Universal Credit entitlement could be recalculated to include your correct housing element. Unfortunately, in some cases, the information provided has not been acted on and therefore some Universal Credit claims contain the wrong housing element.

You have been identified as someone who's Universal Credit has not been updated to include the rent increase. West Lothian Council's Advice Shop - Anti Poverty Service have put together the following information to help you contact the DWP and request that they retrospectively amend your claim from 1st April 2019.

Log into your Universal Credit account, navigate to your journal and post the following text as "Service Issues". You can copy and paste this message.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to formally request that my housing cost element is accurately calculated. In April 2019, West Lothian Council contacted you to advise my rent had increased by 3%. I have now been advised that this may not have been updated on my claim and therefore my housing cost element may have been incorrect since this date. As West Lothian Council informed you at the time, I am requesting that you retrospectively apply this change from 1 April 2019 and issue any underpayments directly to West Lothian Council.

Contact your Housing Officer to advise them that you have requested backdating of your housing element.

If the DWP respond and let you know the request has been successful, contact your Housing Officer to advise them of this. If the DWP advise that they cannot process your request for whatever reason, contact the Advice Shop as soon as possible for further assistance.
