Safety advice and information on obtaining a licence for storage of petroleum

Certificate for storage of petroleum

Trading Standards are responsible for the enforcement of the Petroleum (Consolidation) Regulations 2014 which requires anyone who keeps more than a very small amount of petrol to obtain a Petroleum Storage Certificate.

The certificate application forms and current fees can be found in the related documents box.

For safety, at home you should keep the minimum amount necessary. Petrol must only be kept in approved containers and they must be properly labelled. If the modern plastic approved containers are used, then no more than two 5 litre containers are permitted. Petrol must never be stored in your house.

Safe delivery and storage of petrol

Trading Standards ensure that the certified keepers of petroleum in West Lothian adhere to the statutory provisions relating to the safe storage and use of petroleum and petroleum mixtures in order to minimise the potential risk of fire and explosion.
