School Clothing Grants
The Education (Scotland) Act 1980 gives the education authority a duty to make provision for the clothing of pupils who would, otherwise, be unable to take full advantage of the education provided at schools under its management.
Academic Year 2015/2016
Children attending a West Lothian school from P1 to P7 and S1 to S4 (also students in S5 with a date of birth between 1/10/99 and 29/2/00) may be entitled to a School Clothing Grant. Pupils placed by West Lothian Council at special education provision outwith the authority are also West Lothian Council's responsibility.
Application forms for the 2015/2016 academic year [236kb] can be accepted from 01 May 2015 to 29th June 2016, but you may apply only once for each academic year. If you are applying using Tax Credits as your qualifying benefit, then you must be able to provide a Tax Credit Award Notice detailing payment starting on 06 April 2015.
Families in receipt of Income Support, Income-based Jobseekers' Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance - Income Related, or Working Tax Credit (WTC) or Child Tax Credit (CTC) (with an annual income of £16,105 or less) can receive a clothing grant for each pupil of school age. The current grants are £94 for each primary school aged pupil and £110 for pupils of secondary school age. We aim to process an application within 10 working days.
Pupils staying on at school beyond school-leaving age are deemed to have any requirement for assistance with clothing met by way of an Education Maintenance Allowance and are not provided with clothing grants.
Academic Year 2016/2017
Application forms for the 2016/2017 academic year will be available from 1st June 2016 and will appear under the related documents section of this page from that date. Please note that we no longer post applications to home addresses, every child will receive an application home in their school bag. Parents/carers will receive a Group Call text message alerting them to this fact in due course. Please ensure that your child's school has your most up to date mobile number.
Can I apply for a school clothing grant if I am in receipt of Tax Credits?
For applicants in receipt of Working Tax Credit and/or Child Tax Credit, to qualify for a clothing grant, your gross annual income must be less than £16,105 as calculated by HM Revenue & Customs, and as shown on your award notice. You need to send a copy of your tax credit award letter with your application.
How much will I receive if I am eligible for a clothing grant?
The school clothing grant is £110 for each child of secondary school age and £94 for each child of primary school age at the start of the school session in August.
How often can I apply for a school clothing grant?
You can apply for a school clothing grant once in an academic year. You can apply after 01 June every year, but if using Tax Credits as your qualifying benefit, you must be able to produce a new Tax Credit Award Notice.
What benefits can I get for my child to assist them attend school?
You may be eligible for an education maintenance allowance, free school meals, free school transport or a school clothing grant.
What documents do I need to show to prove I qualify for a school clothing grant?
When applying for a school clothing grant you will need to provide proof of benefit received as stated in the application form. If sending documents, please send photocopies only as we are not able to return them.
Who is eligible for a school clothing grant?
If you receive: Income Support, Income-Based Jobseekers Allowance, any income related element of Employment and Support Allowance, Universal Credit, Working Tax Credit and/or Child Tax Credit (with a household income of less than £16,105), and your child is under the age of sixteen and attends a primary or secondary school, you may be eligible for a school clothing grant.
