HOME SAFETY SERVICE

West Lothian Council's Home Safety Service aims to help maximise a person's potential independence by increasing their personal and environmental safety enabling them to remain living in their own home for as long as possible. People at risk can have unobtrusive and easy to use equipment installed in their own home that is linked to specially trained advisers who will respond to alarm calls for help. The equipment ensures that access to help is there when most needed. The council may also offer this service as part of a larger package of support which may include sending a regular personal care worker.

The Home Safety Service is available to all householders in West Lothian where an assessment has identified needs/risks that can be addressed by technology.

FREE HOME SECURITY FOR PENSIONERS

The council offers a free home security service to pensioners living in West Lothian. The project allows pensioners the opportunity to select a package of home security measures that will be installed free of charge.

Any household in West Lothian, whose members are pensioners or are pensioners who provide care within the household to a person under the age of 60, will be eligible for the service. The service is available to owner/occupiers, council tenants, WESLO/Housing Association tenants and private rented tenants. You must have the approval of your landlord prior to the installation. Those living in non-standard type housing (e.g. sheltered housing) are not eligible. The definition of 'pensioner' is male or female over the age of 60 at the time of application for the service.

How much does the Community Alarm service cost?

The community alarm doesn't cost anything.

What is the Community Alarm service?

The community alarm service provides peace of mind for people who feel at risk in their own homes. It is a 24 hour 365 day monitoring service which works via a special alarm unit connected to the telephone line.

Who is eligible for the community alarm service?

Following an assessment of need (which will take account of your health and social circumstances), we will decide whether or not to provide a community alarm service. We can provide an alarm if you: have an illness, are frail or have a disability which limits your ability to live at home alone; have been in hospital and need some extra support when you come home, perhaps temporarily; and have someone caring for you who needs extra support. If we feel the community alarm could help you to stay at home, we will provide the service and then regularly review your needs.
