Linlithgow Heritage Trust - Annet House

"The Linlithgow Story" run by Linlithgow Heritage Trust, is to be found in Annet House situated on the town's historic High Street just 250 metres west of Linlithgow Cross. Annet House was built in 1787 by a merchant in the town and was occupied as a dwelling house until the 1930's. The museum tells the story of Linlithgow, favoured seat of the Stewart kings of Scotland who built Linlithgow Palace. Learn about the Stewarts and the history and fate of their palace. See also the exciting audio visual display which uses museum objects and a dramatic commentary to recount the history of the town. Learn about the life of the ordinary people of the town and the trades and occupations they pursued. Hear and see the history of linen manufacture once the town's major industry. See the new short film which describes the museum and showcases its displays. This film has been made so that visitors who find the stairs within the building difficult to negotiate may be able to take a virtual tour of the museum. Visit our extensive terraced garden hidden behind the museum. The garden is set out as a traditional rig garden and contains examples of the plants, herbs, fruit trees and bushes which one might have found in the garden of yesteryear. See the spectacular view from the garden across the town to the historic St. Michael's Church dedicated in 1242, to Linlithgow Palace, birthplace, in 1542, of Mary, Queen of Scots and to Linlithgow Loch and the hills beyond. A short film about the garden can be viewed in the museum if the weather is inclement or if the stairs to the terraces seem too steep. Group visits and school visits are welcomed. Guided tours are available. Contact us in advance of the visit and let us know your requirements. The museum is run by volunteers. We need a wide range of skills. Tasks can inculde: Gardening, Cataloguing, Researching and Arranging displays and exhibitions. If you wish to help please contact us.
