Repatriation of bodies to Scotland

What you need to do:

Register the death according to the local regulations in the country and get a Certificate of Death and register the death with the British Consul so that a record for the death can be be held in Scotland.

You will be able to get a copy certificate later from the General Register Office for Scotland, however there is no obligation to do so.

To move a body back to Scotland from overseas you will need an authenticated translation of the death certificate and authorisation from the relevant authorities.

More information on what to do when someone dies while abroad can be obtained from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website.  A link to this web site can be found on the right hand side.
