Birth, marriage and death

Registration Offices in West Lothian provide advice and assistance to anyone requiring information on the registration of births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships. They can accept bookings, conduct civil marriages and issue copy extract certificates. They can conduct citizenship ceremonies and give advice on recording a change of name.

West Lothian is served by seven Registration Offices employing 18 staff, dealing with over 12,000 enquiries to Registration Services each year. In July 2002, West Lothian Council appointed its first Chief Registrar, whose role it is to prepare the service to meet the challenges in the coming years.  The Chief Registrar for West Lothian is Jim Lambert who can be contacted at the Bathgate Registration office.

Civil Registration of births, deaths and marriages was introduced in Scotland in 1855 and the legislation which currently oversees the framework for the Registration Service is the Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages (Scotland) Act 1965, the Marriage (Scotland) Act 1977, the Marriage (Scotland) Act 2002 and the Local Electoral Administration and Registration Services (Scotland) Act 2006 (LEAR Act 2006).
