Dialogues with Trees - Resident Artist Tansy Lee Moir
Tansy Lee Moir is an Edinburgh based artist with a passion for trees. Her sensuous work in charcoal, pastel and drawing, capture the movement and complexity of trees, which sees them as a solid representation of time.
Tansy spent the early part of 2016 exploring West Lothian's 'treescapes', including Calderwood and Beecraigs. This exhibition features some of the dramatic tree forms she found there, along with others from around Scotland and her native Peak District.
Artist Residency with Tansy Lee Moir
In conjunction with her exhibition Dialogues with Trees, artist Tansy Lee Moir will explore some of West Lothian's woodlands and create newly inspired works.
"Personal encounters with trees form the basis of my work, with research done literally 'in the field', usually during the winter and early spring when the trees are free from leaves. Walking, driving, poring over maps, gathering local knowledge, all contribute to my hunt for those trees with something particular to say. Once found, I make repeated visits to sketch, photograph and study, often over many years."
Tansy will explore four themes connected with her exhibition. She will look at local trees, particularly those in designated ancient woodlands such as Calderwood. She will also explore the responses other artists have to trees as their main subject matter and the diversity of those responses. Social activism and ideas surrounding the development of a 'Tree Charter', a new policy around collectively caring for the nation's trees and finally her personal explorations of trees in her work, their history, their role in our environment and their many layers.
