Licences - markets
To operate a market you need to hold a "Market Operators Licence, this includes car boot sales or farmers markets. However, not all markets require a licence, under the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982 the following are exempted from a licence requirement
- Functions held by charitable, religious, youth, recreational, community political or similar organisations;
- markets held only for the sale of livestock, fodder or grain
The council's Licensing Services administers the licensing scheme. Information regarding the licence requirments can be obtained from Licensing Services using the contact numbers or e-mail contact link to the right of the screen. An application form, which includes guidance is available from the links at the bottom of the screen. Each application is treated on its merit but, applicants are advised that mandatory background checks will be carried out by the Lothian and Borders Police.
