Emergencies and emergency services

In most cases, if a major emergency occurs the emergency services will co-ordinate the response and you should follow the advice provided by them.

Unless advised otherwise, the safest course of action is to stay indoors and listen to local radio or television stations.  During an emergency further information will also be available from Lothian and Borders Alert (new window)

What is the council's role during an emergency?

Our main role is to support the emergency services in the response to an incident and oversee the return to normality. We have prepared emergency plans to assist with this. Emergency planning involves assessing threats and where possible preventing them, tackling major emergencies when they occur, carrying on business as usual and restoring normality afterwards.

What can I do to prepare for an emergency?

Visit the Preparing for Emergencies website  (new window) for more information.
