Emergencies - severe weather warnings

The Met Office  (new window) issues alerts and warnings of severe weather.  The only difference is the lead time with which they are issued

  • Warnings are issued up to 24 hours in advance of the severe weather
  • Alerts are issued more than 24 hours in advance of the expected severe weather

Warnings and alerts can be issued for rain, snow, wind, fog or ice.  They are based on a combination of how likely an event is to occur and the potential impact that the expected conditions may have.  Likelihood and impact are measure against a matrix to give each warning or alert a colour - Yellow, Amber or Red.
