The Municipal Bank is a Limited Liability Company and has carried on business as a Bank of Deposit (basically a savings bank) since 1964. The Bank's only branch is in Armadale and operates from the local Customer Information Service office.
The elected members of Armadale along with the Provost and Deputy Provost are the sole shareholders and directors of the Bank. The Bank may not pay a dividend and the directors are not paid any remuneration.
The Bank has no employees other than the directors. The day to day operations of the Bank are carried out by the Council Information Service staff. All secretarial, accounting and taxation affairs of the Bank are carried out by West Lothian Council's Financial Management Unit.
The Bank's functions are basically those of a savings bank with deposits and withdrawals made using a passbook. Direct transfer of customer's wages or salaries from their employers into accounts is also allowed. In addition to this service, payment of standing orders (but not Direct Debit) can be made and cheques payable to third parties can be requested from accounts.
