Road closed after tanker overturns

The A71 is closed at the distillery between West Calder and Addiewell, after a tanker overturned on Friday morning, 10 October.

The alternative route is via the A704 and A706.

Everything in the garden's lovely

A group of thirty volunteers from Royal Bank of Scotland will be working in the grounds of Stoneyburn Primary School on Monday, 6 October, to improve the wildlife garden, perimeter areas and lay paths.

The bank has also donated a greenhouse to the school and this will be erected at the same time.

Principal teacher Matt Shanks said: "We are extremely grateful to both RBS and BTCV for their generous donation of both materials and time."

Leaping along at the zoo

X-Factor finalist Kerry McGregor opened the new Leaping Lemurs soft play area at the Five Sisters Zoo, Polbeth, on Saturday, 27 September.

There was a full day of special activities at the Zoo to celebrate the opening.

Repair work starts on two road bridges

Refurbishment of Crosswood Burn Bridge and Shear Burn Bridge, on the A70 south of West Calder, started on Monday, 22 September, and will last for eight weeks.

Both bridges carry the road over watercourses just to the east of the junction with the B7008.

The work will involve concrete repairs to bridge abutments and wing walls, masonry repairs to parapets and some river training.

"There will be minimal disruption to road users as traffic management will only be required where parapet works are ongoing," said a West Lothian Council spokesman.

German pupils welcomed on exchange visit

Pupils from West Calder High School have welcomed visitors from Germany during an exchange visit.

Eleven pupils from Neckargemund spent the week with 28 pupils from West Calder High School where they will take part in a number of excursions and activities around West Lothian.

Councillor Greg McCarra, who chairs the Fauldhouse and Breich Valley local area committee, said: "School exchange programmes provide opportunities for pupils to meet and socialise with young people from different cultures and backgrounds.

"West Calder pupils visited the school in Neckargemund in May, and they had a wonderful time and enjoyed their hosts' hospitality."

Animals are well fed at the zoo

A community business in West Lothian is helping keep the animals at a local zoo well fed.

For WELFEHD, which supports the development of community based food co-ops in West Lothian is now donating any waste vegetables to the Five Sisters Zoo at Polbeth.

WELFEHD aims to reduce the barriers associated with eating a healthy diet by supplying fresh fruit and vegetables to a wide range of retailers. 

The zoo make good use of the vegetables, which are eagerly awaited by the many species of animal there.

The latest food co-op to open in West Lothian is at St John's Hospital.

Polbeth soccer school

Polbeth United Community Football Club soccer school takes place on a Tuesday night at Limefield Park, Polbeth, between 6.30pm and 7.30pm for boys and girls aged four upwards.
