"The loch has been very busy," added Martine, "new cygnets and coot chicks hatched in the first couple of weeks of June. I was astonished at how 'fully formed' they are when they hatch - out of the egg and into the water, little feet paddling and fuzzy heads bobbing, no messing about."

Scotland's best-selling female album artist of all time will make a welcome return to her native country for a Gala Concert on Saturday September 12 in the Linlithgow Academy Theatre.

Her Linlithgow show will reflect tracks on her current album, mixing folk and pop.
Linlithgow Folk Festival organisers are cock-a-hoop at having secured Barbara for this milestone year. Festival Chairman, Murdoch Kennedy, said: "We are delighted to have signed up such a major recording artist for our tenth anniversary and have no doubt that the concert will be a huge success. This year's programme is taking shape, and it promises to be the biggest and best Festival yet."

Have a heart asks Gazette
The Linlithgow Gazette has launched a campaign to raise money to buy defibrillators for towns in its circulation area.
The paper is working in conjunction with the British Heart Foundation and the Scottish Ambulance Service to help save lives.
Chief reporter Jackie Mitchell said that the defibrillators can be used by ordinary members of the public, if they are with a heart attack patient, until a paramedic arrives.
"Some defibrillators may go to central locations," added Jackie, "others may go to a team of on call first responders, who volunteer along the same lines as retained firefighters.
"The machines are simple to use, and training will be given to local volunteers to make sure help is at hand when it's needed."
Each defibrillator costs £1,500. Schools, community groups and local businesses are being invited to join in the fundraising. For fuller details, e-mail editorial@journalandgazette.co.uk
