Sandbags distributed to deal with flooding

Sandbags were distributed to deal with flooding at the Cancer Research Shop in Linlithgow as heavy rain caused widespread flooding problems across West Lothian on Thursday, 7 August.

"Our road staff have been kept busy during normal working hours and out-of-hours, but we have managed to keep disruption to the public to a minimum," said a West Lothian Council spokesman.

150 years of music making

A century and a half of music making in the local area will be celebrated on Saturday August 30th when the Unison Kinneil Band from Bo'ness brings its 150th anniversary celebrations to Linlithgow for a Gala Concert with Linlithgow Reed Band in the historic splendour of St Michael's Parish Church.

Kinneil Band has had close links with Linlithgow throughout its history.

Its very first public engagement was at the Riding of the Marches in 1859 and it has been ever-present at the annual celebration since that time.

And for many years, Kinneil played at the 7am parade along the High Street on Marches morning and led the 11 am procession to Linlithgow Bridge.

Tickets for the Gala Concert, priced £6 and £5 concession, are available from Blast Off Books and Norman Cummings Textiles on Linlithgow High Street, and from Lyons Hardware store in Bo'ness. They can also be obtained from the committee members of both bands and will be available for sale at the door on the evening of the concert.

Sun shines bright for Bridgend gala

Early showers gave way to bright sunshine when Bridgend held its gala day on Saturday, 2 August.

There was an excellent turnout from the local community to watch the parade wind its way through the streets of the village, prior to the crowning ceremony in the community hall.

Livingston FC is running its popular community programme of football coaching for youngsters again this summer.Livingston FC is running its popular community programme of football coaching for youngsters again this summer.

Aimed at boys and girls from four to 14, training camps are based at Livingston, Broxburn, Armadale, Linlithgow and Uphall, and run until 15 August.

The cost for the week is £30 and includes a match day ticket.

More than 30 youngsters turned up when the coaching visited Linlithgow leisure centre on Thursday, 31 July.

Taking a closer look at Linlithgow

Linlithgow could soon be seen from anywhere in the world - at any time of the day or night.

Pride and Passion Linlithgow is hoping to set up high-quality webcams in the town, so that potential visitors and home-sick exiles can see the high spots.

"We are having some difficulty getting permission for the best camera sites," said a spokesman for Pride and Passion Linlithgow, "but we are still working on it and hope to get the first camera up and running before too long."

Top athlete at taster event

One of the world's leading wheelchair athletes, Kenny Herriot, was the main speaker at Capability Scotland's  physical activity taster evening at Linlithgow Sports Centre on Friday, 25 July.

Kenny, who has strong links with West Lothian, broke the British Record for the marathon in 2005.

In addition to meeting and putting questions to Kenny, there was also an opportunuty to take part in a range of activities, including coaching with Livingston Football Club, The Brain Gain Ceilidh with the Feel Good Factory and badminton with the Scottish Badminton Association.

Big is beautiful for folk festival

Linlithgow's 10th annual folk festival is set to be the biggest ever.

And the organisers have launched a colourful, twelve-page guide to all that is happening.

The programme includes Concerts in various venues,  two ceilidhs, musical cruises and sessions at the Union Canal Centre, children's events, a craft fair, singing and instrument workshops, sessions and gigs in local pubs, as well as an 'Open Stage' for budding performers.

There will also be a 'Best of the Festival' showcase on the Saturday afternoon and a chance to see a top bluegrass band from the United States.
