Licences - storage of petroleum

Trading Standards are responsible for the enforcement of the Petroleum (Consolidation) Act 1928 which requires anyone who keeps more than a very small amount of petrol to obtain a licence, and comply with the conditions it imposes.

The current fees are listed below:

  • Licence up to 2500 litres: £40
  • Licence up to 50,000 litres: £55
  • Licence exceeding 50,000 litres: £115
  • Transfer of Licence: £8

How much petrol can I keep at home?

For safety you should keep the minimum amount necessary. Petrol must only be kept in approved containers and they must be properly labelled. If the modern plastic approved containers are used then no more than two 5 litre containers are permitted. Never store the petrol in your house.
