Tenancy and Allocations

We actively keep housing applicants and current tenants up to date of any developments that are happening. We also seek the views of those we come in contact with to allow us to improve the service. This is done via:

  • Direct correspondence - Tenants News, Applicants News
  • Tenants Information Days - organised by the Tenant Participation Officers
  • Road shows - Scottish Housing Quality Standard Programme
  • Surveys - phone, mail

Allocations Policy for New Build Council Houses

A policy has been agreed for allocating the new build council homes.

Following a consultation process with tenants and applicants, the new homes will be allocated to existing council tenants who are currently on the housing list in the first instance.

Council tenants and housing applicants were asked the question:

" Do you agree that the council should allocate its New Build houses to West Lothian Council tenants first?

Seventy-five percent of respondents agreed with the option, which will meet tenants needs, and free up a significant number of vacancies, which can then be let in accordance with the existing allocations policy.

If new build housing is still available in a specific area and no more council tenants are looking for a move, then the council will use the current allocations policy and select applicants from the council's mainstream lists.

Further information on the Council's Allocation Policy for New Build Council Houses can be obtained from any local CIS (Council Information Service) office.

Change to Allocations Policy for Homeless Applicants

Changes to the allocations policy has been agreed which will affect, applicants assessed as homeless.

As from the 1st of September 2009 any housing applicant assessed as Priority Homeless will be considered for properties of the size they need in any community within West Lothian.

This means that the current policy of choosing a minimum of 15 communities will be removed.

Any Homeless applicant awarded priority before 1st September 2009 will retain their selection under the old system.
