Instrumental Music Service
Instrumental Music Service
School pupils in West Lothian are eligible to apply for free instrumental/vocal music lessons, delivered mostly during the school day, by teachers working for the Instrumental Music Service.
The lessons are provided in all secondary and primary schools and the pupils taking part are also given opportunities to play with one of the many bands and ensembles that perform outside school hours at a range of different events and venues.
The many benefits for pupils learning to play a musical instrument include improved listening and concentration, discipline, co-ordination, language development, memory and social skills.
Lessons are free but there are costs involved in buying music and some equipment. The instrumental music service aims, within available resources, to provide opportunities for pupils in all primary and secondary schools. The children are selected by established musical selection procedures.
At all stages, pupils are encouraged to gain the benefits of playing in school and area ensembles and to assess their progress by sitting external exams.
There is more information for parents in the downloadable 'Tune In' leaflet on this page.
