The Work with Young People Team

The purpose of youth work in West Lothian is to support young people aged 10-25 years to help develop their potential both as individuals and as a member of the community by:

  • Building self esteem and self confidence
  • Developing the ability to manage personal and social relationships
  • Creating learning and developing new skills
  • Encouraging positive group atmospheres
  • Building the capacity of young people to consider risk, make reasoned decisions and take control
  • Developing a world view which widens horizons and invites social commitment

The aim is to support the personal, social and educational development of young people. This can be translated into the following:

  • Young People and Learning
  • Young People Being Included
  • Young People Being Actively Involved

The Work with Adults & Communities Team

The purpose of work with adults is to raise standards of achievement in learning, through community based lifelong learning opportunities incorporating the core skills of literacy, numeracy, communications, working with others, problem solving and information communications technology (ICT)

We do this by

  • Providing 10 learning centres offering computer facilities and training
  • Training for voluntary organisations and groups on, e.g.: child protection; the roles of committee members  through our Voluntary Organisations & Childcare Training Calendar
  • Supporting Management Committees to develop their expertise and knowledge
  • Running adult classes on a wide range of topics
  • Helping adults improve their reading, writing and numbers
  • Running lip-reading classes for people who have hearing difficulties
