Taxi fare setting

Under the terms of the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982 The Council sets taxi tariff (fare table)   The fare set consists of two elements, the flag drop rate - that is the initial fare and a rate per yard/time, there may be extra charges). The current fare table (copy available below) was approved by the Council in November 2005 and came into effect in February 2006. Licensing Services working in partnership with West Lothian taxi operators will carry out a public consulation when a fare increase has been proposed by the taxi trade.

The fare table applies to all hire vehicles (taxis and private hire cars fitted with with a meter).  No taxi is permitted to opeate without a meter.  Private hire cars do not have to have a meter and the fare is set by agreement.  The fare tabel only applies to journeys within West Lothian area, if a journey is planned that takes the taxi out of West Lothian then the fare is by agreement.

The council's Public Transport Service has introduced a taxi Card scheme - more details of that may be obtained from West Lothian Taxicard, County Buildings, High Street, Linlithgow, EH49 7EZ, tel. (01506) 775287, fax. (01506) 775265
