Population

The population of West Lothian is 172,990 (GRO-S 2011 mid-year estimate) and it is predicted to increase throughout the period to 2035 with the population predicted to be 179,912 at 2015, 193,354 at 2025 and 205,345 at 2035 (GRO-S 2010 based population projections).

Census

For census and other data about population and households:

Scotlands Census Results Online (new window) (SCROL) - is the main source of information from the 2001 Census.

General Register Office for Scotland (new window) (GRO) - are responsible for the registration of births, marriages, civil partnerships, deaths, divorces, and adoptions. GRO runs the Census and uses Census and other data to publish information about population and households. GRO is the main source of family history records.

Scottish Neighbourhood Statistics (new window) - is the Scottish Government's on-going programme to improve the availability, consistency and accessibility of small area statistics in Scotland. The website provides information on a range of small area statistics including information on health, education, poverty, unemployment, housing, population, crime and social / community issues at the data zone level and above.

INSPIRE

The INSPIRE (Scotland) Regulations 2009 came in to force on 31 December 2009. The regulations implement EC Directive 2007/2/EC in Scotland. The purpose of the regulations is to create a Europe-wide electronic network of spatial information. As a part of this the data that West Lothian Council holds relevant to Annex I and II of the regulations is listed below, together with details on where to find the relevant metadata, the information describing the datasets.

1. The council takes data from the Ordnance Survey on the following topics:
Coordinate reference systems - Systems for uniquely referencing spatial information in space as a set of coordinates (x, y, z) and/or latitude and longitude and height, based on a geodetic horizontal and vertical datum.

Geographical grid systems - Harmonised multi-resolution grid with a common point of origin and standardised location and size of grid cells.

Geographical names - Names of areas, regions, localities, cities, suburbs, towns or settlements, or any geographical or topographical feature of public or historical interest.

Administrative units - Units of administration, dividing areas where Member States have and/or exercise jurisdictional rights, for local, regional and national governance, separated by administrative boundaries.

Transport networks - Road, rail, air and water transport networks and related infrastructure.

Hydrography - Hydrographic elements, including marine areas and all other water bodies and items related to them, including river basins and sub-basins.

Elevation - Digital elevation models for land, ice and ocean surface. Includes terrestrial elevation, bathymetry and shoreline.

2. The council provides data to One Scotland Address Gazetteer which covers the following topics:
Addresses - Location of properties based on address identifiers, usually by road name, house number, postal code.

Geographical names - Names of areas, regions, localities, cities, suburbs, towns or settlements, or any geographical or topographical feature of public or historical interest.

Transport networks - Road, rail, air and water transport networks and related infrastructure.

3. The council uses data from SEPA on:
Hydrography - Hydrographic elements, including marine areas and all other water bodies and items related to them, including river basins and sub-basins.

4. The council takes data from both SNH and Historic Scotland and also holds some data itself on:
Protected sites - Area designated or managed within a framework of international, Community and Member States' legislation to achieve specific conservation objectives.
